Siluetesdel barri
With a small light bulb at the tip of the finger, the visitor traces the outline of a neighbourhood building in the dark, until it lights up whole and gets its name back.
01 — The work
Siluetes del barri · Siluetas del barrio is an installation for the neighbourhoods of Barcelona. A camera follows the visitor’s raised index finger, which becomes a small light bulb drawn in line.
Passing the bulb along the outline of a neighbourhood building, the line lights up and stays lit, while the inside can only be guessed. When almost the whole outline has been traced, the light frosts over the drawing from the last point touched, with an arpeggio of glass, and only then does the building’s name appear. There is no timer and no score: only a faint percentage at the bottom.
The interface is in Catalan, with Spanish below. The camera is only used to follow the hand, inside the device: no image is stored or sent.

02 — The story
This is ours too
Every neighbourhood has buildings that are not in the guidebooks, but that everyone recognises: the market, the old school, the chimney that no longer smokes, the façade you see every morning when you leave home.
Heritage is not only what has been catalogued. It is also the value that neighbours give to the buildings of the place where they live: the memories they hold, the lives that passed through them, the way they draw the landscape of the neighbourhood. Often, if they are still standing, it is because the neighbours defended them.
Recognising a silhouette is a way of saying: this is ours too. Caring for the landscape of the neighbourhood is caring for the memory of those who live in it.
03 — The artist

Damián Lafferranderie Peña (Maldonado, Uruguay, 1983) is a Uruguayan artist and creator based in Barcelona. He works at the crossroads of body, technology and cultural heritage. His interactive works run in the web browser and use the camera as their only sensor: the visitor's hands become the instrument.
He practised law in Uruguay for fifteen years. In 2023 the wave of artificial intelligence carried him to Barcelona, where he devotes himself fully to this revolution, and technology allowed him to make this kind of art.
He is the founder of Estudioprompt, an artificial intelligence studio whose purpose is to minimise the risks and maximise the benefits of this revolution. The works aim to be collaborative, open source and dynamic. In this space we are always looking for intelligent futures.
